ABSTRACT
Marine geology relies on remote observation (ship-based or even ROV- or AUV-based) of the vaste realm of the seafloor and sub-seafloor geological phenomena and structures, then grountruthed by visual inspections, coring, and seafloor sampling. Issues such as location of the vessel (or other platforms), resolution, density, accuracy, spatial interpolation of data are common to all the methods. The integration of different kind of data and the need to tune data density to the scale of the observed phenomenon is also typical of marine geological researches.
ABOUT THE CONVENERS
Donatella D. Insinga is researcher at the IAMC-CNR of Naples. She earned a PhD at University of Naples Federico II in 2004 and since then her interest has been focused on tephra deposits as a tool to date Mediterranean sequences. She has developed competences in drilling operations on board of oceanographic vessels during more than 15 cruises and she has acquired skills in sampling procedures, processing and interpretation of tephrostratigraphic data. Gained competences include also radiometric dating (40Ar/39Ar) of volcanic rocks. She has been involved in several national projects dedicated to the geological mapping of both marine and terrestrial areas, geo-marine hazard and paleoclimate reconstructions. Her research interests include: event stratigraphy, high- and ultrahigh-resolution (at centennial scale) integrated studies to synchronize successions among depositional basins and between marine and continental basins, tephrochronology as a tool for the definition of the new Geological Time Scale, chonostratigraphic reconstruction of Campania Plain volcanism through the 40Ar/39Ar dating method and ash dispersal hazard. She is author or co-author of 34 papers on ISI Journals and of more than 50 contributions to national and international congresses and workshops.
Maria Rosaria Senatore is Associate professor at the University of Sannio in Benevento, where she is teaches Geology and Stratigraphic Geology. Her skills include the Marine Geology with emphasis to the stratigraphy of the subbottom along to the Tyrrhenian continental margin of the southern Italy and of the Gulf of Taranto. She studied: - the recent geological evolution of the continental shelf of the Salerno, Pozzuoli, Gaeta and Taranto gulfs, by means of seismic stratigraphy, physical stratigraphy and sedimentology of cores; - the environmental changes in relation with high and very high frequency climatic changes; the deep sea turbiditic systems. She has been: - Director of the Geological field work of the 1: 50.000 geological sheets Rotondella, Policoro e Foce del Sinni – marine sectors; this activity was carried out in the National Project Car.G.; - Scientific coordinator of the University of Sannio unit in the MAGIC Project (Marine Geohazard along the Italian Coasts) of the National Civil Defence; - Member of the National Technical and Scientific Committee of the MAGIC Project.
Her expertise also include the geological evolution of the coastal plains during the Pleistocene – Holocene time: - the geological evolution of the Sele, Sarno rivers and of Metaponto plain by means of physical and sequence statigraphy carried out on outcrops and boreholes; - the facies analysis and facies associations; - the chronostratigraphic correlations; - the environmental and climatic high frequency changes. She had the Academic award for the Earth Science in 1989 by the “Accademia di Scienze Fisiche e Matematiche della Società Nazionale di Scienze Lettere ed Arti in Napoli”. Maria Rosaria Senatore is author or co-author of several ISI and no ISI Journals as well as of national and international conference proceedings.
Claudio Pellegrini is a geologist and holds a PhD in Earth Science, from University of Bologna, Italy. He is currently a post-doc researcher at the Institute of Marine Science (ISMAR-CNR). During his research experience, he has developed a strong background in exploration geology. Dr. Pellegrini skills encompasse seismic interpretation, seismic and sequence stratigraphy and sedimentology with particular emphasis on understanding continental margin stratigraphy in coastal, shelf and slope systems. His current research is focused on quantitative source-to-sink sediment transport analysis, with the main goal of predicting how and where sedimentation of fine and medium grained deposits occurs, from the river channel to the deep basin. He is involved in several research project in collaboration with Universities (Milano, Aberdeen and Bologna), Oil company (Exxon-Mobil) and Research Institute (Institut Français de Recherche pour Exploitation de la Mer, Ifremer). Despite his relatively short carrier, he is co-author of about 10 publications on international journals and conference proceedings and he is actively working on several manuscripts.
Dr. Elena Romano is a marine geologist working as researcher at ISPRA (Istituto Superiore per la Protezione e Ricerca Ambientale). Her research activity is focused on marine sediments from transitional and coastal environments and sedimentological/geochemical aspects connected to contamination levels for the evaluation of environmental quality. She leads the Laboratory of Sedimentology developing during the years specific methodologies for sampling and analyses of grainsize and mineralogical determination of marine sediments, focused to understanding the dynamics of accumulation of contaminants in the sediments. She organized in 2016 a workshop about the results of "1st International Intercalibration Circuit for grainsize analysis". She belong to Working Group of SNPA (National System for Environmental Protection) for the definition of national guidelines about sampling activity in marine areas and grainsize analyses of marine sediments. She belong to Steering Group of SedNet from 2008, an international network focused on different aspects of sediment, soil and water from the environmental viewpoint for a correct management in the European vision.
She has been teacher in 2016 during the Marine Strategy Training about "Sampling and grainsize analysis methods for marine sediment" organized by the Ministry of the Environment.
She is co-author of more than 40 publications on international and national journals and she is a guest editor of special issue of Marine Pollution Bulletin about benthic foraminifera as ecological indicators.
Alessandra Savini is Assistant professor at the University of Milano Bicocca, where she lectures “Introduction to Marine Physical Geography” and “Applied Geomorphology and Benthic Habitats”, for the International Master Degree in Marine Sciences.Her expertise encompasses studies of marine geology, with emphasis to seafloor and benthic habitat mapping along the continental margins, in order to investigate sedimentation processes and their interaction with benthic habitats. Her research activity deals with geo-acoustic seabed characterization, geo-spatial analysis methods for benthic habitat mapping, statistical analysis of biotic-abiotic relationships in benthic habitats, and geo-hazard assessment related to mass wasting processes. She is particularly interested in the main line of biosphere-geosphere coupling in those complex habitats formed by ecosystem engineers. Research is mainly dedicated to Mediterranean (Tyrrhenian sea, Sicily channel, Ionian sea, southern Adriatic sea) and tropical (Maldives) marine environments, from the shelf to the abyssal plains. She gained long experience in coordinating research activities on board oceanographic vessels, with multidisciplinary purposes too (participation in more than 40 oceanographic cruises, as Chief Scientist in 20). She has been involved in a number of National (among others RITMARE, Marine-Strategy, MAGIC, BioMAP) and International marine research projects (as task or work-package responsible) also founded by the European Community in the framework of the 5th, 6th and 7Th Framework programs (BioDeep, HERMES, CoralFISH, CoCoNet). She is a member of the Scientific Committee of MaRHE (Marine Research and High Education) center (www.marhe.unimib.it), Milano-Biococca outpost at Magoodhoo isalnd, Faafu atol, Republic of Maldives. Alessandra Savini is author or co-author of 22 publications on ISI Journals and of more then 40 publications on national and international non-ISI journals and conference proceedings.
Daniele Spatola is a marine geologist who earned his PhD in “Earth and Marine Sciences” from the University of Palermo. At present, he is a researcher at the Marine Geology & Seafloor Surveying group at the University of Malta, where his main research activities involve the study of submarine landslides, fluid flow processes and other marine geohazards using different kinds of marine geological data (e.g. electromagnetic, reflection seismic, acoustic, gravimetric and sedimentological data). Dr Spatola is experienced in the acquisition, processing and interpretation of a wide range of marine geophysical and sedimentological data. He has taken part in many oceanographic surveys in the Mediterranean Sea and Pacific Ocean, and has participated in various international scientific projects. Dr Spatola is actively involved in various research programmes and currently working on fluid escape processes offshore north Sicily, the Sicily Channel, the Maltese Islands and the South Island of New Zealand. He has presented his work at a number of international conferences and received scientific awards.
