ABSTRACT

The safety of ship and navigation, as well as of all sea coastal activities, mainly depends on the accuracy and reliability of the information about the sea state conditions. Measurements are fundamental to effectively support decisions and their quality reduces the decisional risk. In this respect, measurement obtained from onboard GNSS systems, inertial devices or gyroscopes, as well as from SAR or optical images and ground-based devices, could be useful to improve the safety of navigation and coast environments and detect in almost real time the main sea state parameters. The session focuses on recent developments in the field of measurement systems and techniques to deliver more accurate information about the surveyed environment.

ABOUT THE ORGANIZERS

Francesco Crenna is Associate Professor at the University of Genova, Polytechnic School, Department of Mechanical Engineering- DIME. He is a member of IMEKO, International Measurement Confederation, technical committee TC7-Measurement Science, and TC18-Measurement of Human Functions. His research activities are developed in the Measurement Laboratory of which he is responsible. Main interests are vibro-acoustic measurements and signal processing by time-frequency and timescale analysis aimed at monitoring and maintenance. Measurement uncertainty evaluation by probabilistic methods, with applications to measurement-based decisions. Measurement of perceived quantities such as vibrations and sound. Inertial and video measurements and modelling applied to biomechanics. He is the author of more than 100 publications on journals and international conferences.

Silvio Del Pizzo is Assistant Professor (RTDb) at the Science and Technology Department of the University of Naples "Parthenope" in Celestial Navigation and member of the PArthenope Navigation Group (PANG) Laboratory. On May 2013 he obtained the PhD in Geodetic and Topographic Science at University of Naples Parthenope. His research activities are focused on the geomatic field and specifically the main interests are Camera sensors, photogrammetry, computer vision and remote sensing applied to the navigation, GNSS positioning and integration algorithms. From August 2013 he worked as postdoctoral researcher in several projects of University of Naples “Parthenope” with Navigation, Positioning and Remote Sensing as main topic. He is the author of 30 publications on journals and international conferences.

Vincenzo Piscopo is Assistant Professor (RTDb) at the Science and Technology Department of the University of Naples "Parthenope" and member of the PArthenope Navigation Group (PANG) Laboratory. From January 2016 to December 2017, he worked as junior researcher (RTDa) at the same University, where he also was postdoctoral researcher from October 2012 to April 2015. At the end of December 2009, he obtained the Ph.D. in Aerospace, Naval and Quality Engineering at the University of Naples "Federico II", where he earned cum laude the Master and Bachelor Degrees in Naval Engineering in July 2006 and July 2004, respectively. His research activity involves ships and marine structures, with particular reference to non-uniform torsion, buckling and ultimate strength analysis of platings affected by pitting corrosion wastage, mooring design and optimization, dynamics of offshore structures and design of wave energy converters. He is the author of more than 50 publications on journals and international conferences.
