Guided tour of the Castle of Milazzo

Visiting the Castle of Milazzo, or better said the Fortified Citadel, will make you step into Sicily’s rich past.
Starting from the main Gate we will walk through an imposing tunnelled gateway in the Spanish walls, dating back to the first half of the 16th century; a few steps away we will visit the Old Main Church built at the beginning of the 17th century and then we will head towards the Bastion of the Island, projecting outward from the curtain walls, which offers great views over the western shore of the peninsula. From the near-by Revelin of the Annunciation we will discover a mysterious symbol
Proceeding towards the top we will walk by the Monastery of the Benedectine Nuns and stop at the Aragonese Gate, showing a pointed arch. We will then continue our trip back into history reaching the Swabian Walls and Gate (13th century) which lead to the Courtyard dominated by the Norman Tower, the oldest part of the Castle.
With a last effort we will step into the so-called Frederick’s Domus and to the top terrace. The view from here spans from the northern shore of Sicily to the Aeolian Island and if it is a clear day the Calabrian shore and Mount Etna. It is a magnificent panorama of deep greens, burnt browns and dazzling blues. I’m sure you will agree it was worth the effort.
